Overview
Active Matter Aviation, part of the Active Matter product line, delivers advanced VR training solutions for the aviation industry.
This project developed six immersive VR applications within a comprehensive 147-module training package, revolutionizing traditional learning methods.
Challenge
Adapting the detailed technical manuals for VR required innovative approaches to simplify and visualise complex concepts.

With VR sessions limited to 10-15 minutes, we had to present content efficiently to keep it engaging and informative.

Developing six modules in six weeks demanded careful budget management and creating engaging interactions to maintain user interest.
Design Process
The on-site visit provided insight into the process and highlighted the challenges that students and instructors might face.
UX research that included competitor analysis, interaction design, audience behaviours, and preferences, as well as the creation of behavioural scenarios, helped to draw a bigger picture of the application and understand the future of the product.
Creating information architecture, wireframes, storyboards, and user flows gave us a clear picture of the application, enabling us to proceed with prototyping using real-life props or applications like Unity and Shapes XR.
We tested our flows and ideas, iterated on designs needing improvement, and I executed the revisions to fit the budget and project deadline.
Summary
-
Collaborated with aviation experts to develop accurate simulation algorithms and continuously update the app with the latest industry standards and practices.
-
Implemented a modular approach where information is presented progressively, allowing users to delve deeper into topics as needed. Use visual aids, step-by-step guides, and interactive scenarios to facilitate learning.
-
Used immersive storytelling and real-life scenarios to make the training more engaging and relatable.
-
Integrated features that allow for real-time communication, hand-raise, notifications, and collaborative exercises. Provide tools for instructors to monitor progress, offer guidance, and customize training sessions.
-
Optimized VR settings for comfort, offering teleportation and adjustable movement sensitivity options. Conduct thorough user testing to identify and mitigate potential issues to make the application more accessible.

Project Planning
My responsibilities included planning tasks, identifying necessary features for the six chapters, and ensuring alignment with business needs and deadlines.
This involved strategic foresight to anticipate requirements, coordinate with stakeholders, and manage timelines effectively, ensuring a seamless integration of UX design within the overall project framework.
Interaction Design Library

Purpose
Designed and deployed an Interaction Design Library to boost efficiency and sustainability and streamline the design process.
This initiative improved team communication and workload management by providing a comprehensive set of tested, reusable interactions. The library enabled a more cohesive workflow by standardising these interactions across projects, allowing teams to focus on innovation and quality.
UX Specification
The UX specification provides a comprehensive summary of all application mechanics. This document is particularly valuable for the QA team, serving as a detailed reference to support their testing and verification processes.
User Flows
Our user flow system is tailored to meet the needs of all cross-functional teams. Through continuous improvement, we developed the most efficient layout that works seamlessly for the Development, Art, UI Design, Narrative, and UX teams. This system integrates all effects, interactions, and audio elements in one place, ensuring a cohesive and streamlined process for all involved.
In-app shots
We facilitated testing with our clients and internal hero users to ensure the application was functioning.

Using Shapes XR and rapid prototypes in Figma, we examined what needed further iterations and what worked well.
